Petrusse's Notepad: Did you know?
JACQUES MAJORELLE
In 1919, French painter Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) settled in Morocco, in the Medina of Marrakech, where he fell in love. In 1922, he bought a palm grove on the outskirts of Marrakech, to the northwest of the Medina, and starting in the summer of 1929, he built a villa-studio for himself, in a Moorish and Art Deco architectural style, surprisingly modern for the time. He set up his main residence on the first floor, as well as a vast artist's studio on the ground floor.
YVES SAINT LAURENT
Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé discovered the Majorelle Garden in 1966, during their first stay in Marrakech : "we were seduced by this oasis where the colors of Matisse blend with those of nature." They bought the Majorelle Garden in 1980. The new owners decided to live in the artist's villa, renamed Villa Oasis, and undertook extensive restoration work on the garden to "make the Majorelle Garden the most beautiful garden, the one Jacques Majorelle had envisioned." The painter's studio was transformed into a Berber museum open to the public, featuring a display of high fashion works from the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collection.
MAJORELLE BLUE
Majorelle Blue is a unique color name inspired by the walls of the garden of French painter Jacques Majorelle. It refers to a shade obtained with ultramarine blue, also known as Guimet blue.
This is the color of our dreams...
